MINTIS publishing house
The first steps of MINTIS Publishing House dates back to 1945, when it started its operation as a Publishing House of political literature. In 1949, it was merged with the Publishers of Encyclopaedias, Dictionaries and Scientific Literature, and renamed into Lithuanian State Publishing House of Political and Science Literature. The House assumed the name of MINTIS in 1964. Almost a decade later, a number of editorial offices, related to the preparation of Lithuanian encyclopaedia, split away from the Publishing House. From the very date of foundation, the Publishers work situated in the same location of Vilnius Centre, Sierakauskas Street.
Before the restoration of Lithuanian Independence, MINTIS Publishing House was one of the five major National Publishers, which published not only political, historical, sociological, philosophical, law, medical and other science literature, books about Lithuanian regions, nature, mythology, traditions, but also books for foreign readers about Lithuania, albums, reference books, dictionaries, as well as fiction (mostly of foreign authors).
Once Independence Movement started its activities in Lithuania, the first editions of then underground ATGIMIMAS (Rebirth) paper were prepared in MINTIS’ premises. The Publishers also published the first memoirs of former deportees to Siberia.
After Lithuania regained its Independence, MINTIS Publishing House went through many structural changes. Now it is a stock company.
Besides publishing activities, at the moment, MINTIS is involved in book distribution throughout Lithuania and also runs its bookshop.
